Why Choose Our Program?
The Accounting Program in the Davis College of Business & Technology provides students with the knowledge and skills to facilitate a career in Accounting or Corporate Finance.
The program prepares students for accounting certification. Becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is essential for a career in public accounting and serves as a springboard for industry careers in accounting and finance. Becoming a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) facilitates a career in Accounting or Finance with a Corporate firm. In addition to gaining the needed technical knowledge for these certifications, we help students develop the strategic foundation to become effective managers and leaders. This combination of technical, leadership and management skills provides a competitive advantage over traditional accounting programs.
Curriculum
Students pursuing this degree will take the Davis College of Business & Technology Core Curriculum courses in addition to required accounting courses and electives. These courses prepare the student to pass the CPA and/or CMA Exam, expanding their job opportunities upon graduation.
In the accounting program, we encourage our students to take the accounting certification exams during the summer following graduation while their accounting knowledge is still fresh. The CPA and CMA demonstrate key technical knowledge needed to gain employment in public accounting, private industry, finance, and banking.
Many accounting majors go on to pursue their Master of Business Administration (MBA) at JU. Our Grad2Grad program offers the opportunity to receive both an undergraduate and graduate degree in as little as five years.
Pursing a graduate degree allows students to build on their accounting knowledge and focus on the skills necessary to advance their careers. We would argue that building leadership presence and style, coupled with the ability to be an effective part of a successful team, are necessary competencies for virtually any (viable) profitable career. These skills are integral to our MBA experience. When we speak to recruiters, one of the primary desirable attributes of prospective hires is their leadership skills and potential.
The Possibilities are Endless
Our network is your network. Research databases, such as Capital IQ and Refinitive, provide students with opportunities for deeper research and analysis of real-world companies to evaluate firm and portfolio performance. These opportunities enhance students’ ability to apply their technical knowledge to real-world situations during their careers.
Accounting majors often pursue one or more accounting internships with local companies gaining valuable experience in their field. Graduates have gone on to successful careers with the PGA Tour, Merrill Lynch, Deloitte & Touche, KPMG, Black Knight, the City of Jacksonville, Continental Insurance, AT&T, American Transtech, and the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
